What Are Structured Learning Experiences?Top of Page

Structured Learning Experiences (SLEs) are supervised, in-depth learning experiences aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) that are designed to assist students to more fully:
  • Clarify career goals and interests;
  • Explore career possibilities;
  • Develop employability skills;
  • Demonstrate and apply high level academic and technical skills; and 
  • Ease the transition between high school and employment and/or further education and training.

There are many benefits for a variety of stakeholders when it comes to SLEs. Below are some examples of how students, schools, business/industry and community can benefit. 
  • Explore and learn about various career fields in order to make more informed decisions about goals in life and the education needed to reach those goals. 
  • Increase motivation/appreciation for staying in school and pursuing postsecondary education and career opportunities. 
  • Development/practice of positive work-related habits and attitudes including the ability to think critically, problem-solve, work in teams, and communicate effectively. 
  • Make education more relevant and valuable.
  • Increase student retention, graduation and placement rates. 
  • Exposure to state-of-the-art equipment, technology and techniques. 
  • Guidance in understanding the education and skills needed to secure jobs and be successful employees. 
  • Establish stronger partnerships between business/industry and schools to help ensure that the curriculum supports the development of the Career Ready Practices. 
  • Create environments of collaboration and cooperation among the school, business and community in order to build a more productive and diverse economy.
